The first pizza known to exist was during the time of the Achemenid Empire (Persian 648-330 BC), and was a crude version of today's pizza, consisting of flat dough and cheese cooked on the front of metal shields. Today, pizza generally consists of an oven-baked flat dough covered with tomato sauce, cheese, and various other toppings. One the first known pizzeria's in North America was opened by Gennaro Lombardi in 1905, and was located in New York City. One of the earliest known chain resturants in North America is Pizza Hut, opening the first resturant in the 1930's.
Pizzas that are bought in supermarkets are generally raw and need to be cooked in an oven, while pizza bought at pizzeria's, are baked fresh. Toppings generally include: cheese, seasonings, vegetables, meat, seafood, and fruit. Different sauces, cheeses, spices, and toppings are used to create that special and delicious dish. There are many different styles of pizza, with anything changing from the shape, to the different type of dough that is used, or even the thickness of the crust. Pizza can generally be found all over the world, though it may go by another name.
